From theater to music and dance, it’s been a while since any of us have seen a live show. But in the absence of the physical stage rise a few groups that aim to push the boundaries—both metaphorical and physical—of performance. Fifth Wall Fest is one of them.

First launched in 2020, Fifth Wall Fest is the Philippines’ first international platform for dance on camera; bringing together artists, filmmakers, and audiences from around the world in celebration of dance and movement. By offering spaces for visibility and education, it challenges one’s perception of dance by exposing how movement exists all around us.

The festival’s second run this year is happening virtually from October 8 to 17. Over 50 local and international dance films will be screened on their website, including performances by the renowned Scottish Ballet, Hong Kong Ballet, and English National Ballet. Participants can also sign up to join exclusive behind-the-scenes panels and discussions with select local and international filmmakers—all free of charge!

“There’s a finer eye in curation this year, and we’re also expecting more Filipino and Asian films,” says Fifth Wall Fest’s founder, Madge Reyes.

In its inaugural run, Fifth Wall Fest screened 41 international and 16 local films—including the Filipino dance film “Hataw Na!” (1995) starring Gary Valenciano and Dayanara Torres, which was also digitally remastered.
